NFL, Anxiety and Ed Friedman

On the day after “Great NFL Flag Weekend”, the talking heads are exhausting themselves with troubled fervor. They postulate the events will create a “conversation”, expecting an evolved and helpful result (more tolerance, more understanding, less conflict) to ensue.

These are false hopes.

“The colossal misunderstanding of our time is the assumption that insight will  work with people who are unmotivated to change.”   – Ed Friedman

Until this great truth is at least widely understood, no change is possible.

On the other hand,  the weekend offered striking examples of individuals defining themselves

Coping maturely requires:

  • Being non-anxiously present
  • Self-defining
  • Maintaining the outside position whenever possible

Peace and  Courage,

Howard
